SAFETY & SUSTAINABILITY
RANGERS
The JTMF Rangers are not security and they are not your mom. They are festival lovers just like the rest of us. They are trained to deal with a myriad of situations that may arise at a festival and they dedicate a portion of their time at the festival to looking out for the rest of us. They are probably wearing khaki and can be identified by their golden yellow ‘Ranger’ shirts. You can find Ranger HQ in the campground near the shower trailer on the main path, adjacent to Medical & Dance Safe.
SAFETY TEAM
Our JTMF Safety Team is a group of incredible individuals available around the clock, trained in harm reduction/deescalation who also LOVE JTMF and are here to help us maintain a safe and supportive environment. Typically dressed in black with “SAFETY” on their shirts, these humans are here to help so please don’t hesitate to flag them down if you need help. Their HQ is located near StarGate on your way into the backstage area.
MEDICAL
Medical Doctors, EMTs, Registered Nurses & Paramedics on site to provide first aid and emergency services 24 hours a day for the duration of the event. You can find Medical in the campground adjacent to Rangers and DanceSafe.
CPR, EMT, RN, MD, or first aid experience? Our Medical Team is headed by Lighthouse Medical Services and their website to apply is here.
DANCESAFE
We are honored to partner with DanceSafe. This wonderful non-profit organization shares resources and education with festival attendees about substances, sexual health, consent and more. You can find DanceSafe in the campground adjacent to Medical & Rangers near the shower trailer.
DanceSafe is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization. They provide free services, supplies and education to tens of thousands of festival patrons each year. Support their work with a tax-deductible donation.
Visit their website for educational and substance testing resources.
REES
Joshua Tree Music Festival has partnered with REES (Respect, Educate, Empower Survivors) to provide online reporting for unwanted sexualized behaviors. REES allows festival-goers, performers, staff and volunteers to create a record of the incident and share it with festival organizers. REES also provides information about community-based resources such as sexual assault centers, healthcare and other support services.
REES can be accessed online at any time, year-round. Simply go to their website and select Joshua Tree Music Festival from the drop down list.
JTMF believes not only in the music, arts and community but also in Sustainability!
It’s imperative that we all do our part to minimize waste and coordinate our efforts.
Fun fact: our food scraps go to a local farm. How can you help?
Sort your trash into our labeled waste receptacles, you’ll notice at each station we have signage telling you what goes where.
Sort any trash at camp as best you can, bonus points for dropping sorted trash off at the Transfer Station in Day Parking.
You can sign up as a work exchanger with the Sustainability/Green Team via our Get Involved page. You’ll get a festival ticket, meals, and our endless appreciation for your efforts.
Thank you for helping us leave the desert even better than we found it!
REUSABLE CUP PROGRAM
We’re always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact! Since May 2023 we have implemented a reusable cup program that has been highly successful in reducing the number of single use items going to the landfill. Attendees may reuse these cups as much as they would like during the festival (OR! Bring your OWN!) and when they’re done, drop them in the bright orange bins that look like the cups!
REDUCING PLASTIC WASTE
We’re a proud supporter of the BYOBottle Campaign which engages artists, venues, festivals and fans to reduce plastic waste in the music industry by promoting reusable water bottles and water refill stations at music events. We have always had FREE water on site for attendees.
We encourage attendees, artists and crew to utilize REUSABLE containers for all beverages. High quality water bottles and cups are available at our merch booth – show some JTMF love and reduce your footprint for the win!
RE-PURPOSED BUILDING MATERIALS
Look around the festival site and you’ll notice that we’ve got a passion for repurposing. From barn wood and garage doors to car gears and bike chains, we love giving salvaged objects new life and think they add special character to the festival site. Our Beer Garden bar, built by local artist Guy Green, is constructed entirely from gathered timbers, bottles and local clay. Earthen benches in the Music Bowl and Sanctuary were made with local earth and collected bottles. Satellite dishes and water tanks become shade structures, second hand garage doors become roofs and we utilize paint that would otherwise be thrown away.
Materials typically have several reincarnations at JTMF – we try to make every bit count! If you have materials you would like to repurpose please do reach out!
NO MORE PRINTED PROGRAMS
In 2020 we ended the practice of providing paper program booklets to reduce waste. Around the festival grounds you will find schedules posted – look for the signs that say INFO. You’ll only ever be but a short distance from all the info you need to guide you day to night through music acts, workshops, yoga and random acts of mindfulness! And, as always, all of that info is available on our website, on your phone, in your pocket. We hope you’re as excited as we are about eliminating the landfill that is created by the programs.
